Sandro Perri writes and records music for almost a decade. Under the moniker Polmo Polpo he did some electronic and ambient, before turning to a more folky driven sound and using his real name. Landscapes that seem to have no borders and experiences of nature are reflected in his work. It fits the picture, that this year he collaborated with singer/songwriter Christine Fellows and John K. Samson, lead-singer of The Weakerthans for a short film about Ontario’s Peninsula National Park.
2011 also saw the canadian born artist release a new album called “Impossible Spaces”. It draws inspiration from Psychedelic Pop, shimmering Sixties Folk and post-modern Indietronic. It combines acoustic guitars, mellow percussion and well arranged keyboards. Here is the beautiful clip for “Love And Light”.
From Duesseldorf comes a new series of musical clips. The young team of “Urban Unplugged” started their youtube-channel two months ago and has since then done shootings with local acts like Adrian Pauly and Honig, but also some european guests as Isbells (Belgium) appeared.
Recently “Urban Unplugged” had the chance to film Friska Viljor (Norway) when they where playing at a local venue called zakk. See the charming boy perform “What You Gonna Do”.
If you are into Folk and Singer/Songwriter you should know St. Thomas. For all who love the norwegian artist and everyone else, here are some good news. From the Rhineland comes a passionate tribute project, “The Cool Song”-EP.
Schreng Schreng & La La (Duesseldorf) and Hello Piedpiper (Koeln) team up for a split-single in honor of Thomas Hansen aka St. Thomas, who died in 2007 by “unfortunate combination of prescribed drugs”. He left the world lots of beautiful and fragile songs, compareable to his idol Elliot Smith. The 7’ Inch features the original recording of “The Cool Song” and two cover versions. It will be released on the german indie label Stargazer Records.
This release is a matter of passion, not money or fame. You can order the 7’ Inch here. Please show some heart!
Recently this blog features a lot of british songwriters. I don’t exactly know why, but I guess it’s nothing to worry about. So here is another artist from Great Britain. Luke Leighfield is called “UK’s biggest underground pop star” and if you watch his new video, you’ll know why. The young man seems to have what it takes to become a star without the need of being a cheap rip-off. Catchy melodies and smart lyrics go together with a great musical talent.
Early 2012 will see Leighfield release a new album on the german label Stargazer Records and later this year he will tour germany. I’ll have the pleasure to host one of his shows at “Endstation Sehnsucht” in Wuppertal at December 2nd.
Reykjavík’s music scene is known for it’s variety and quality. The movie “Backyard” takes a close up on a certain part of this scene and captures a special one time event. Arni and Arni, one musician, the other film maker set up a show in their backyard, invite a couple of bands and buddys and just started shooting.
“It’s about getting good pictures and sound, but people can show up. So maybe there might be an audience”, that’s how it starts. Eventually the crowd is not far away and the whole show turns into a semi-private celebration of scene-spirit. A scene united by attitude and sensibility, not music style.
This really nice and personal documentary features acts like Mum, Sin Fang (solo project of Seabear singer Sindri Már), Borko, Retro Stefson or FM Belfast. Highly recommended for music lovers of all ages.
Open your ears and hearts for a small and simple folk song. Polly Barrett from Cork, Ireland (home of The Butterfly Graveyard) recently released her debut album and the title track “Mr. Bookshop” got me in seconds.
Compare it to Suzanne Vega or Joni Mitchell if you like. One might even say that it has a certain Norah Jones-touch. Grown up songwriter-pop by a young lady. Not only for book lovers.
Here is a little advertisement. In 2008 I started the “Buzz Pop”-Fanzine as a personal thing, a gift for myself and my friends. Now it’s time for another issue!
The language of choice is german, but there are also some english text’s in it. Issue 3 is the “interview special” and features Ian Fisher, Killed By 9V Batteries, Isbells, Stabil Elite, Schreng Schreng & LaLa, My Bubba & Mi, Stargazer Records, Roadtracks Magazine and more.
